Some of my most joyous baseball memories are the result of his brilliance. (I’ve already gone on too many times about his 17-K performance at Yankee Stadium in September 99…the game that got me escorted out of the ballpark for my own safety.) His 2006 return to Fenway was chill (and tear) inducing. On the other hand, his continued obfuscation during same return was childish, and I’m very happy the Sox aren’t on the hook for his salary. (Among other reasons is this Sunday’s starter.) [...] […] I’ve had a long, and somewhat complicated history with Pedro. Some of my most joyous baseball memories are the result of his brilliance. So much stands out with me in the wake of Pedro's "I didn't want to leave" tall tale. Pedro was great when he was at his best in Boston, and I loved him. The 17-strikeout game was legend, and my best memory of him was that playoff relief performance against Cleveland in 1999. Magic and legend. But he has been betrayed by his huge ego. He wanted out, but he wanted the love, too: The loving adoration of the Boston fans, who he appreciated because they know the game so well, and the money. (Apparently he loves revisionist history, too.) Bottom line: Had the Red Sox matched the Mets offer, they would have regretted it. Pedro's ability to effectively pitch in the AL East has diminished. He can flourish in the NL East because it is a significantly weaker division. Pedro, thanks. It was great. We'll always love you for the joy you brought us. But the fact it the Red Sox brass, the "Computer geeks" made the right decision to not match the Mets offer. Good luck and feel free to stop by the next time you're in town.
