Interesting stuff--but this story actually hints at another huge advantage the highest payroll teams have on teams like the Royals: they can afford to not rush even their highest quality prospects and let them build that scaffolding that Bill James talks about. The Pedroia example is a pretty good one on this point--instead of even being tempted to rush him up last year when Bellhorn faltered, they eat Bellhorn's salary and go get Graffanino, a $2M/year player. Few teams have that luxury.

Great post - however, the thing to also remember is that most prospects don't pan out in the show and it's not necessarily an organizations fault. Besides a lot of no name minor league players, who get no love from their respective organizations, make it on the big stage and there are many variables to consider. The Sox have gotten lucky, to a large degree, with Papelbon and the jury is still out on Lester, Hansen, and Declareman.

Ironically, we hired Baird (former Royals GM)as a consultant. Maybe he'll be Theo's NO MAN...whatever he says Theo will do the opposite....
