How right you are, but this shouldn't only apply to pitchers...all players who have proven they can succeed in a specific environment, like Fenway say, should be given extra special consideration. And speaking of physical history, I recall Clement had shoulder/neck issues at the end of 04 and the Cubs had to shut him down. This seems like it should have been a major red flag. And how did MRI's never pick up anything on Clement's shoulder? And why did the Sox wait all year to explore the damn thing? “I also see much more clearly how important a pitcher’s physical history and his ability to succeed in a specific environment should be taken into consideration.”

They have a history of signing guys with questionable durability and then wonder why their staff wilts every August in the Texas heat. Were they to have signed (or groomed) a rotation of half-a-dozen or so Rick Hellings they could have made a serious run at the post-season in many of their offensively productive recent years. Clement, Wright, Pavano and Wells went from the NL to the AL. Of that group, Clement and Wells were clearly the most productive. Unreal that I can say that without laughing but Wells had a pretty decent season last year and Clement had a pretty good half season last year. Both contributed little this year. For all of the heat that Theo gets for signing these two you here little to nothing of the two disasters signed by Cashman (Although word is that George's Tampa contingent lobbied for these guys). Now look at Pedro and Lowe doing the reverse commute. Going from the AL to the NL is like living in South Boston and working in Marshfield. Every morning you see people pulling their hair out in bumper to bumper traffic while you are going 80-85 mph wondering if this is too good to be true. Of course those guys are (were in Pedro's case) doing well. Also, if you want to talk lopsided trades how about the Cubbies trading Clement for Dontrelle Willis... http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/chc/news/chc_gameday_recap.jsp?ymd=20031011&content_id=574553&vkey=ds2003game&fext=.jsp Take a look at some of these guys. Whatever else you wan tto say about Harry Sinden, he had a damn good run there getting key pieces in what at the time looked to be somewhat lopsided trades against the Bruins.
