…of Barry Bonds trolling the winter meetings in desperate search of a contract. It sure is hard to imagine Hammerin’ Hank or the Babe down in Orlando hoping to interest a team in his services.

I love this quote:
“Barry’s only instructions have been to put him on a team that has a chance of making it to the postseason. He’s not going to be part of a rebuilding plan or part of a youth movement.”
That’s for sure.
Frankly, I’m kind of surprised that the Giants are talking to him at all. I suppose they have to, if only for the sake of fan relations, but still.
Seth, it is a funny image of seeing Bonds combing a hotel lobby and rooms, oking for work. But let’s not overglamourize Hammerin’ Hanks or even Babe’s final days in the pros.
Thirty days after breaking Babe Ruth’s all-time home run mark, Aaron was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers for Dave May and Roger Alexander. He played DH for two years for the lowly Brewers, which allowed Aaron to also break the all-time RBI mark.
For Ruth, after barnstorming the Far East with an All-Star team in 1934, the Bambino signed with the Boston Braves as a free agent in 1935. He hit .188 with six homers that year. The Braves finished the year 38-115, one of the all-time worst seasons for a team.
Not exactly pretty finishes for any of these legends.
