“Also, Holliday and Helton would top Ruth and Gehrig nine times out of ten…”

Displaying all the graciousness of a Steinbrenner, Rockies owner Charlie Monfort reacted to his team’s total annihilation at the hands of the Red Sox with the following “I just ate ten tabs of really strong acid” statement:
“I think this team is a better team than Boston. It would have been nice to have another two, three, four days. … I think they got the breaks. Are they a better team? I don’t think so. You give us 10 games against them, we’ll beat them six.”

He went on to boast that he had slept with more women than Warren Beatty, was better at chess than Gary Kasparov, and would have bested Johnny Carson in the ratings if he’d decided to host a late-night talk show.

  2. I think they got the breaks.

Sure. The chief break was when John Henry bought the team five years ago and kept it out of the hands of fatuous, egotistical losers like Charlie Monfort.

  3. Yup, we caught the breaks, we didn’t trade for Helton. Thanks for playing Charlie, but give credit where credit is due.

  4. Monforts don’t deserve the Rockies. Peanuts for payroll, and lets see if they really sign Halliday to an extension. They caught lightning in a bottle once, difficult to do twice.
The series could have gone 20 games and the result would have still been the Red Sox.

  5. Due in part to my recent reading habits, I parsed that first comparison as “slept with more women than Warren Buffet”. I wasn’t quite sure where you were going with that.

  6. I guess when you play in an inferior league you get an inflated opinion of yourself. Brad Hawpe, 119 rbi, really…reminds me of a poor man’s Mike Greenwell. The Rockies starting staff is imho the absolute worst rotation to ever appear in the series, hands down. Schilling era under 3.00 if he signs in the national league.

  8. Seth,
You gotta check out (and dissect) the latest Chass column. This time it’s on Torre’s disturbingly eager pursuit of another managerial job. Read it and learn if its Joe’s ego, spiteful nature, or abject greed that compels him to remain employed in professional baseball. I’ve given it my own sarcastic treatment but I think we’d all like you to weigh in on this latest inane missive from the muddled mind of Murray.
